Celtic Tattoos
Celtic tattoos have been popular for the past decade or so – interestingly enough among people who you might not expect would get tattoos! Put it down to the graceful, timeless beauty of these designs which seem to lend themselves particularly well to tattoo art.
Think of Celtic knots, crosses or spirals – or, more often than not, an intricate combination of several of these elements. Celtic tattoos are definitely one of the most attractive types of tattoo out there today.
Celtic Cross Tattoos
A Celtic cross tattoo
The Celtic cross is the standard Christian cross, but with a big difference. Intricate knotwork adorns the cross, making it both simple (in its overall design) and complex at the same time. A Celtic cross is a popular choice for the upper arm – a great spot in general to put a tattoo, as that location makes it easy to hide it and show it, as you wish. Interestingly, the Celtic cross is popular with Christians and non-Christians alike. It's also popular with new age people, but also in hardrock environments. Despite its overtly religious connotations it’s a great decorative symbol in its own right.
Celtic Butterfly Tattoos
Lots of animal images are included in traditional Celtic art – stylized cats, dragons and birds are common, for example. Another popular image is the Celtic butterfly – quite an understated little tattoo image, until you look carefully at the intricate decoration that it includes. The Celtic butterfly is often quite small and feminine looking, making it appropriate for the ankle or shoulder. It can be very small and delicate, or slightly bolder if you prefer.
The Celtic Shamrock
Nothing symbolizes Ireland (homeland of the Celts and of all Celtic design) more aptly than the shamrock, the quintessential Celtic design. The shamrock symbolizes the luck of the Irish, and seems a very auspicious symbol to have on your body! The Celtic shamrock is rather more detailed and intricate than the shamrock images you may be used to, but this universal symbol of luck is still easily recognizable.
Other Celtic Tattoo Art
If none of these possibilities appeal to you, there are still countless other Celtic tattoos that you can look at and choose from. For example, check out the Celtic tree images and the abstract designs that incorporate elements of leaves, scrollwork or spirals. Some of these designs are very old, dating back several thousand years; all are beautiful and will give you both luck and aesthetic satisfaction for years to come. Celtic tattoos are popular right now, and they are likely to remain so indefinitely.
