Chinese Tattoos
Chinese tattoos are just one type of cosmopolitan symbol tattoo that appeals to us today. Interestingly though, tattoos had quite a negative connotation in traditional Chinese culture. In fact, there was a belief that the body is a sacred gift from one’s parents and should not be altered in any permanent way – which of course includes tattooing. At the same time, there has always been tattooing in China. The first Chinese tattoos were considered a punishment – sort of a mark of disgrace.
Chinese Characters

Nowadays, though, Chinese tattoos are popular among westerners, and it’s easy to see why. The art and character symbols of the traditional Chinese culture are very good tattoo symbols. Chinese character tattoos for example, consist of a word or expression written in Chinese characters, whose graceful lines lend themselves perfectly to that art of tattooing. Of course, those wanting Chinese writing tattoos are cautioned to choose their word or phrase carefully – make sure it really means what you think it does! Also, make sure that the tattoo artist you select is able to reproduce it correctly.
Chinese Dragons and Other Symbols

Chinese characters tattoos are not the only type of Chinese tattoo that is popular today. Some people opt for a Chinese dragon tattoo or a tattoo of Chinese symbols, such as the yin yang. In fact, yin yang tattoo art is one of the most popular designs among younger people in North America in the past decade or so. Again it is easy to see why. The symbol is simple yet dramatic. It can be rendered in almost any size – a small yin yang tattoo the size of a quarter or even smaller is very tasteful, but it makes a strong statement. In addition, many people are interested in Eastern spirituality nowadays and the yin yang is a meaningful symbol of balance and harmony. Finally, though you can get tattoo art in a great variety of colors, black makes the boldest statement and lasts longest without fading. The black and white yin yang tattoo art is a perfect example.
Chinese writing tattoos and tattoos that incorporate other Chinese art of symbols are a great choice for a tasteful tattoo. Despite the dubious attitudes towards tattooing that was found in traditional Chinese culture, there is some evidence that tattooing and other body art are making inroads among Chinese youth today.
For us in the west, Chinese tattoos are here to stay. To get a clearer idea of the type of symbols used, do a Google search for “Chinese tattoos” under ‘images’. Find a tattoo artist who has had experience with Chinese characters tattoos and can render the symbols correctly.
