Star Tattoos
Star tattoos are an interesting alternative to the more common sun or moon images. There are many variations of star tattoos and many people claim that these images have a powerful symbolic or metaphysical meaning. In fact, the start is a significant image in many religions and belief systems. Some star tattoos reflect these meanings, though others – like a shooting stars art tattoo – might have a more personal meaning.

Stars are magical, and can be associated with fairy designs and other magical images. Shooting star tattoo designs are suggestive of wishes coming true, for example. In fact shooting star tattoos are a very popular image, being versatile and pretty. A shooting star image can incorporate a ‘trail’ of smaller stars, which very pretty and delicate – a great way for a tattoo to cover a slightly larger area but still remain subtle.
Other varieties of star tattoos include the nautical star, a composition of sun and moon, and religious images like the Star of David and the Wiccan pentangle star. Nautical star tattoos are less feminine than most other star tattoo ideas and they represent the fact that stars were used for navigation for thousands of years.
Moon star tattoos are just what they sound like – they combine a moon and star image, the standard representation of the night sky. Some of these have a slightly fairy tale look, like an image from a child’s picture book. Others are more stylized; for example, these and other star tattoos can be incorporated into a tribal-style tattoo design. In fact, sometimes a star shape is open to interpretation – more of a stylized star shaped tattoo design.
In other cases, star tattoos are most definitely stars – and in some cases, the specific star images have a special significance. One tattoo design of stars is the pentangle – a five pointed star – inside a circle. This is the Wiccan (or white witch) symbol, and a fairly popular goth tattoo. And interestingly, though the Jewish faith prohibits tattooing, a Star of David tattoo is not uncommon! These and other star tattoos are sometimes thought to have powers of their own; for example, they can be protective or they can simply ‘mark’ one as belonging to a specific belief system. In any case, suffice it to say that star tattoos can sometimes transcend the purely decorative and take on a more metaphysical or symbolic meaning.
